ODDL hosts infrastructure and skills to carry out metabolic studies in ocular environment. Test compounds can be incubated in cultured ocular cell lines or primary cells (e.g. corneal epithelium, conjunctival epithelium, retinal cells) using different methods of cell differentiation. Also, metabolism is investigated using isolated eye tissues, such as cornea, lens, iris/ciliary body, vitreous, retina/choroid, or their lysates. The tissues are obtained from rabbit, porcine and bovine eyes. Metabolism can be studied also in vivo in rabbit eyes. Formation and identity of metabolites is analysed using LC/MS (liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry) methods (e.g. orbitrap, triple quadruple) using qualitative or quantitative approaches.
